  • USPS set to abandon “Express Mail” brand in July

The US Postal Service is set to rename its Express Mail service in July – Priority Mail Express.

The change is expected to take place July 28th, according to internal communications at USPS and filings made to regulators.

USPS wants to rename Express Mail as Priority Mail Express International.

The Postal Service wants to “refresh the public’s awareness” of its fastest mailing and shipping service, which has seen revenue and volume figures stagnate in recent years, by tying it to the “powerhouse” Priority Mail brand.

One of the aims is to  simplify the USPS package services line-up.

With the new service name, USPS will be providing new packaging for its expedited delivery services. However, it said it will allow mailers to continue to use existing Express Mail and Express Mail International names and packaging unit January 2014.

New shipping labels and retail receipts will indicate day-specific delivery information, USPS said, stating 1-Day, 2-Day, 3-Day, Military or DPO (Diplomatic Post Office).

Along with the Express Mail name change, subject to approval by regulators, USPS is also planning to add insurance to its Priority Mail services.

The Postal Regulatory Commission approved the changes to the Express Mail branding in May.

  • USPS to change delivery schedule

The United States Postal Service announced yesterday that it is slimming down its delivery schedule, potentially opening up new market share for UPS (NYSE: UPS  ) and FedEx(NYSE: FDX ) to put their stamps on. Here’s what you need to know:

    The detail
In a press release issued yesterday, the USPS announced that, starting in August, it will no longer offer Saturday mail delivery. The move comes as part of a larger movement to cut costs at USPS, which has been in dire financial straits since 2006.

Weekday-only deliveries are not a new idea, but what’s more surprising about the announcement is what it doesn’t include: packages. According to the USPS, package delivery demand is soaring even as mail deliveries crumble.
